Introduction

The final tournament of the year will be a surprise visit to Renegade Roundup! As some players may remember, Renegade Roundup was an experimental tournament format that was infrequently ran by MKCentral affiliates all the way back in 2018. Now, six years later, MK8DX Staff present Piranha's Pursuit — MKCentral's first-ever tournament series solely dedicated to Renegade Roundup! Since this is a Battle Mode event, there are a lot of unique rules and procedures to go over. Please carefully read over the information listed below as certain rules will be vastly different to their counterparts in the MKCentral Universal Ruleset for MK8DX Team Competitions.

Match Organization
  • All matches in this tournament will be 5v5, instead of 6v6 which is the standard for wars.
    • CPUs must be turned off.
    • Due to the nature of this tournament, as having more or less players than the other team can provide an unfair advantage or disadvantage, teams are not allowed to mutually agree to playing 4v4, 4v5 or 6v6.
    • Since this tournament utilizes 5v5, the minimum number of players per squad to have a squad "eligible to participate" has been reduced to eight.
  • All matches will be three minutes long.
  • All matches in this tournament will consist of eight rounds, instead of 12 races which is the standard for wars.
    • Matches will be split into two Grands Prix.
      • The first Grand Prix (first four rounds) will utilize Normal Items.
      • The second Grand Prix (final four rounds) will utilize No Items.
      • The Grand Prix order is non-negotiable; the Normal items GP must occur before the No Items GP.
      • Hosts will not reset the room between the first and second Grand Prix (e.g. hosts will remain the same, as the room will remain open between the GPs).
Match Scoring
  • Matches will be scored based on the number of round wins earned between both teams, instead of the total points earned between both teams (e.g. matches will be scored as 6-2, instead of 508-476).
  • In the event of a tie at the conclusion of the match (e.g. a 4-4 after the eight and final round), ties will be broken based on the total points earned between both teams.
    • Individual points are earned for either capturing players on the opposing team (if your team is currently the "Authorities") or freeing your own players from the cage (if your team is currently the "Renegades").
Miscellaneous Rules
  • When organizing in-game teams for this tournament, players on the hosting team must always be put on the Red Team, who will start as the "Authorities"; the role responsible for catching the "Renegades" within three minutes. Players on the away team must always be put on the Blue Team, who will start as the "Renegades"; the role responsible for fleeing and escaping from the "Authorities" for the entire three minutes.
    • To make organizing in-game teams as easy as possible, players are only required to wear team tags. Registry names are not required and players are free to use any name they wish, so long as it is appropriate and inoffensive.
  • Due to there being only eight Battle Mode maps, maps may be played up to two times per match.
    • If the track roulette lands on a map that was played for a third or more time, the player that picked it will receive a -5 point penalty to their score.
  • Teams may not pick a map for themselves in any given match more than once (e.g. if the hosting team picks SNES Battle Course 1, and the track roulette lands on SNES Battle Course 1, that team cannot pick SNES Battle Course 1 again for the rest of the match. The away team can still pick SNES Battle Course 1, however, provided the away team hasn't already picked it.).
    • If the track roulette lands on a map that was picked by a specific team for the second or more time, the player that picked it will receive a -5 point penalty to their score.
  • Just like in wars, map selections reset with each match. Map selections do not reset after each Grand Prix.

Tournament Information — Format, Ruleset, & Schedule

Piranha's Pursuit is a two-stage tournament. The tournament will last for two weeks (four days in total). Below is an overview of the tournament structure. The tournament will be capped at 16 teams to allow the tournament to run smoothly, but this is subject to change depending on how many teams sign up initially.

Stage 1 — Swiss Stage

Stage 1 will feature a Swiss pool where all teams will compete together. Over the course of the first weekend, teams will progressively play against other teams with a similar skill level (e.g. both teams have the same win-loss ratio) to their own level. In total, teams will face off against four other teams. As Battle Mode teams are practically impossible to seed for a number of reasons, teams who sign up will be randomly assigned a number between 1 and 16; this will serve as a team's seed in the Swiss stage. Unlike other tournaments on MKCentral, all teams will advance to the next stage of the tournament. The Swiss stage only serves as a way to seed teams for the final stage of the tournament.

Stage 2 — Single-Elimination Bracket Stage

Stage 2 will be a single-elimination bracket. Over the course of the second weekend, teams will face off against other teams based on their seeding; to be specific, a team's final standing in the Swiss stage will equal a team's seed in the Bracket stage (e.g. finishing fifth in the Swiss stage will make your team the fifth seed for the bracket). Teams eliminated in this stage are eliminated from the bracket and therefore, are eliminated from the tournament. This stage is winner-takes-all, and the winner of the bracket will be declared the winner of the tournament. All matches, including the Finals, are Best of 1.
